Are Either Products or Reactants Favored?

Postby marisaimbroane1J » Mon Jan 14, 2019 7:24 pm

I just wanted to get clarification on this in case it came up on an exam-- If we got a K value like 160 as an answer and the question asked if products or reactants are favored, would we say neither since it is not greater than 10^3? Since the K is >1, technically there is a higher concentration of product at equilibrium.... I just wouldn't want to get the question wrong based off of a technicality like this.

No, products are favored but they are not greatly favored. You are right when K>1 there are more more products than reactants at equilibrium.

The only time when neither direction is favored is when K is equal to one, any other time one direction is favored it is just not considered to be strongly favored unless K>10^3 or K<10^-3

As long as you explain that products are favored since K>1 and add/clarify that it isn't strongly favored since K<10^3, it should be correct.
