The bronsted definition of acid is any species that can donate a proton, and a base is any species that can receive a proton. The conjugate acid of a base is a base gaining a proton(for example, the conjugate acid of NH3 is NH4+), and the conjugate base of an acid is an acid losing a proton (for example, the conjugate base of NH4+ is NH3).
