pKa and pKb

Postby 1K Kevin » Thu Jan 17, 2019 10:41 am

I'm getting a bit confused but what does a high pKa mean in comparison to a low pKa, and same with pKb. I know that a low pKa means a high pKb but would that be a stronger acid/weak base or a stronger base/weak acid.

A lower pKa value indicates a stronger acid. That is, the lower value indicates the acid more fully dissociates in water.

Remember that on the pH scale Acid is a lower number so when you have a low Pka that means its a strong acid.

the same trend also applies for pKb: the lower the pKb, the stronger the base

High pKa= weak acid/strong base
Low pKa= strong acid/weak base

High pKb= weak base/strong acid
Low pKb= strong base/weak acid
