What is the difference between an endothermic reaction and an exothermic reaction?

An endothermic reaction requires energy, while an exothermic reaction releases energy.

When temperature increases, if the reaction is endothermic, then the products are favored. Conversely, if the temperature is decreased for an endothermic reaction, then the reactants are favored.
When temperature increases for an exothermic reaction, then the reactants are favored. Conversely, if the temperature is decreased for an exothermic reaction, then the products are favored.
When temperature increases for an exothermic reaction, then the reactants are favored. Conversely, if the temperature is decreased for an exothermic reaction, then the products are favored.

If the reaction is endothermic, then the products are favored when temperature increases.
If the reaction is exothermic, then the reactants are favored when temperature increases.
The opposite is true for each of the above statements when temperature decreases.

When a reaction is endothermic, think of heat as a reactant.
When a reaction is exothermic, think of heat as a product.

For exothermic, you can think of heat being released, so it would be reactants --> products + heat. Vice versa, for an endothermic reaction heat is required for the reaction to proceed, so it would look like reactants + heat --> products. So if temperature was increased, equilibrium would shift opposite of where heat is, the direction depending on if the reaction is endothermic or exothermic.

Hi! Another thing to think about is that exothermic reactions heat up their surrounding areas, while endothermic reactions cool down surrounding areas.

Exothermic reaction gives a net release of heat and thus would result in delta H to be a negative value.
Endothermic reaction requires heat and thus would result in delta H to be a positive value.
