We did not go over Hess's Law in 14A and I believe that it will be covered later in the quarter in the thermodynamics outline.

I think we will use Hess's Law solve for the total enthalpy of a reaction. It proves that enthalpy is a state function. (It can be added or subtracted easily because it is not dependent on the reaction's pathway.)

Hess's Law is taught in Chem 14B like stated above. It's used to calculate the total enthalpy of the rxn using the separate enthalpies of rxns in between.

I'm in Lecture 4 and we just went through Hess's Law today during the 3pm lecture. Hess's Law states that enthalpy changes are additive (since enthalpy is a state function). Therefore, enthalpy at each step of a multi-step reaction can be added to give the total enthalpy change.
