Acids and Bases (weak or strong)

Postby Melissa Villanueva1K » Thu Jan 24, 2019 9:45 pm

How do we determine whether an acid or base is strong or weak? Thanks!

in terms of Ka values i think for weak acids the Ka value is very small compared to that of a strong acid but i dont know if that applies for weak bases

You can determine whether an acid/base is strong or weak by solving for Ka and Kb. If Ka/Kb is larger than 10^-3, consider it to be strong. If it is less than 10^-3 consider it weak.

It is more convenient to remember all the strong ones and the rest will be weak. See the following for strong acids and strong bases.
HI HBr HClO4 HCl HClO3 H2SO4 HNO3
NaOH KOH LiOH RbOH CsOH Ca(OH)2 Ba(OH)2 Sr(OH)2
