reversible/irreversible

Postby Marsenne Cabral 1A » Sun Jan 27, 2019 4:10 pm

Can someone help me clear up the difference between reversible and irreversible reactions and the difference in work?

In terms of thermodynamics a reversible reaction has no change in entropy, so no extra energy is needed to reverse the reaction. Irreversible reactions on the other hand cause an entropy increase to reverse the reaction.

A good example of an irreversible reaction is combustion.

Is combustion even reversible with added energy?

No, I believe combustion is never reversible, no matter the circumstances. The C02 and water formed cannot react to reform the fuel and oxygen, so the reaction is always irreversible.

Combustion cannot be reversible. The products (carbon dioxide and water) cannot react to form the reactants (fuel and oxygen).

In a irreversible reaction, the reactants react to form the products, which cannot revert back into reactants. In reversible reactions, as the reactants react with other reactants to form products, the products are reacting with other products to form reactants

In reversible reactions the reactants react with other reactants to form products. In a irreversible reaction the reactants react to form the products, which cannot revert back into reactants.

A reversible process is one where the system is always at a point of equilibrium whereas the irreversible process is one where the system is not always at equilibrium. Also, reversible processes tend to do more work.
