Re: Heat Capacity
Heat capacity just refers to how much heat is needed to raise the temperature of some substance by 1 degree C. Molar heat capacity is how much heat is needed to raise the temperature of 1 mole of that substance by 1 degree C.

Re: Heat Capacity
Heat capacity is just the amount of heat required to raise of an object by 1C. It does not specify the amount of the object. The units are usually kJ*C-1 or kJ*K-1.
Specific heat capacity is the heat required to raise the temperature of 1 gram of a substance by 1C.
Molar heat capacity is the heat required to raise the temperature of 1 mole of a substance by 1C.

Re: Heat Capacity
The difference between heat capacity and molar heat capacity is that heat capacity is the heat required to raise the temperature of any amount of an object by 1 degree Celsius whereas molar heat capacity is the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of a 1 mol of a certain substance by 1 degree Celsius.

Re: Heat Capacity
Heat capacity is the amount of energy it takes to raise the temperature of a substance by 1 degree Celsius.
Molar heat capacity is the amount of energy it takes to raise the temperature of a substance by 1 degree Celsius per mole of a substance.
These two are essentially the same thing, but molar heat capacity is a more specific type of heat capacity and much more useful when we are doing experiments.

Re: Heat Capacity
Molar heat capacity specifies that it is the amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of an object of 1 mole by 1 degrees celsius, while heat capacity does not specify an amount (i.e. 1 mole).

Re: Heat Capacity
Its also important to note that occasionally the book says "molar heat" or "specific heat" which simply are shorthand for molar heat capacity and specific heat capacity respectively.

Re: Heat Capacity
The variable that represents heat capacity is I think just "C", please correct me if I'm wrong.
