Cp and Cv

Postby Nicole Nikolov 1K » Sun Mar 18, 2018 9:25 am

Is there a way to convert between the molar heat capacity at constant pressure and constant volume, Cp and Cv? Or would we have to be provided this information on an exam? Also, is there a way to convert between the specific heat capacity and the molar heat capacity?

CP,m = CV,m + R

Or, the molar heat capacity at constant pressure is equal to the molar heat capacity at constant volume plus the gas constant.

Cp and Cv are usually just used for different conditions, either constant pressure or constant volume. I'm not sure when u would switch.

If a system has Cp can it also have a Cv? and Vice Versa?

They are used for different conditions and questions

If the gas constant, R, must be used, would it be given on the test?
