closed vs isolated
What is the difference between a closed and an isolated system? Is an isolated system just sealed?

Re: closed vs isolated
A closed system only allows for the exchange of energy in the system. On the other hand, an isolated system does not allow the exchange of energy or matter in the system.
Re: closed vs isolated
A closed system has a fixed amount of matter but can exchange energy with the surroundings/environment. In an isolated system the system can't exchange matter or energy with the surroundings.

Re: closed vs isolated
A closed system has a fixed amount of matter, but can exchange energy with its surroundings. An isolated system there cannot be transfer of energy or matter between a system and its surroundings. An open system can freely exchange matter and energy with its surroundings.
Re: closed vs isolated
For a closed system, only heat can be transferred in and out the system (so matter is not included). But for isolated systems, energy and matter both cannot leave or enter the system, therefore making the energy and mass fixed in an isolated system.

Re: closed vs isolated
A closed system is also sealed, but the transfer of energy is what is observed. When comparing open and closed systems, we observe changes in matter.

Re: closed vs isolated
In a closed system, energy can be exchanged with the surroundings. In an isolated system, neither matter nor energy can be exchanged with the surroundings.

I always think of an isolated system like a closed hydroflask compared to a closed water bottle. The hydroflask has layers of steel around it and truly isolates whats inside.

Re: closed vs isolated
In a closed system, energy can be exchanged with the surroundings but not matter, the example used in class was a beaker that had been sealed, in an isolated system does not allow for heat or energy to be exchanged with the surroundings, a helpful way for me to think of it is to think of it similar to an insulated system, like a travel coffee mug or hydro flask would be insulated, not allowing any matter/energy to escape
Re: closed vs isolated
Energy can be exchanged with the surroundings. Nothing can be exchanged in an isolated system.

Re: closed vs isolated
a closed system may still exchange heat energy with its surroundings while an isolated system can't. for example, an isolated system might be insulated in order to ensure it can't exchange heat energy with its surroundings.

Re: closed vs isolated
a closed system is capable of influence with outer environments and variables while an isolated system cannot be changed whatsoever.

Re: closed vs isolated
A closed system can only exchange energy with its surroundings, while the isolated system cannot exchange anything with its surroundings.

Re: closed vs isolated
With a closed system, there is still an exchange of energy with the surroundings. But, with a sealed system, there is no exchange of energy or matter with the surroundings.
