Open, closed, or isolated systems

How do you determine if a system is open, closed, or isolated?

An open system can exchange matter and energy. A closed system can exchange energy (e.g. heat) but not matter. An isolated system cannot exchange energy or matter.

An open system, like a cup of water, can exchange matter and energy with the environment. A closed system, like a closed water bottle, can only exchange energy. A isolated system like a sealed thermos can exchange neither.

Some examples:
Open - An unsealed flask of liquid; an open soda can
Closed - A sealed flask of liquid, an unopened soda can
Isolated - The universe; A high-quality sealed thermos*; a bomb calorimeter*

* (these are not 100% isolated, but for our reference the heat transfer is approximated to 0)

open system- matter and energy can exchange with surroundings
beaker of water- water can evaporate and breaker does not insulate
closed system- energy can exchange with surroundings
sealed beaker of water does not insulate
isolated system- nothing exchanges with surroundings
combustion of glucose in a bomb calorimeter

An example for an open system would be like an automobile engine or the human body. An example for a closed system would be putting an ice pack on an injury and for an isolated system would be a hot liquid inside a thermos bottle or a sealed vacuum flask.

An isolated system is when the system can neither transfer matter or energy into its surroundings, so this would be a system that is completely sealed and insulated from its surroundings.
A closed system is when there can be a transfer of energy however not a transfer of matter, therefore this would a system such as a sealed beaker of water.
An opened system is a system where there can be energy and matter, therefore an example would be an open beaker of solution.

I believe that the question/problem will usually give enough hints as to whether a system is open, closed, or isolated if it was not explicitly stated.

Isolated system: system where nothing can exchange with surroundings

An open system allows anything to pass into the system while a closed system only allows energy (so like a thermometer). An isolated system is a system is completely isolated from outside energy and matter.
