Cup of Tea

Postby Lina Petrossian 1D » Sun Feb 03, 2019 11:53 pm

Could someone explain why a cup of tea is considered an open system?

It's open because you can change the amount of tea. If you are able to pour more tea into it, it's because it is open!

A system which can interchange mass and energy is considered an open system. A cup of tea is susceptible to the environment.

since in a cup of tea will cool down over time, it will exchange energy with surroundings. since a cup is typically not covered on the top, tea could also leave the system . since both matter and energy can be exhanged, then a cup of tea is an open system

Because it is an open system the system also is at a constant pressure because the system's pressure is the same as the outside pressure.

Because it is susceptible to change.

It's open because it can exchange both matter and energy with its surroundings. For example, you can add or take away tea and it can also be cooled or heated.

A cup of tea would be an open system because matter and energy can be transferred between the system and the surroundings.

you can both change the matter within it (the tea) and transfer energy by holding it and making it warmer or cooler

An open cup of tea can have its matter and energy changed. It fully interacts with the surroundings.

A cup of tea is open to the surroundings. So matter can enter and exit (steam, sugar, etc.) and energy can leave in the form of heat.

A cup of tea can interact with its surroundings, ie release heat from the tea into the universe, making the universe infitesmilly warmer. Closed systems like a hydro flask or thermos cannot do that, it is isolated/insulated.

you can change it's energy AND matter. you can add or remove the tea, and you can heat it up/cool it down :)

It is open because matter and energy can be transferred in and out of it.

As defined in the textbook an open system can exchange matter and energy

The tea can receive and transfer matter to its surroundings, as well as energy in the form of heat

A cup of tea is an open system because energy and matter can exchange with the surroundings. You can add more/less tea (matter), and tea can become hotter/colder (energy).

That's the tea, sis

It can exchange both matter and energy with its surroundings.
