Negative q

Postby Melissa Villanueva1K » Wed Feb 06, 2019 11:23 pm

When do you use a negative value for q when calculating entropy?

Heat (q) is negative when the amount of heat is being released/reaction is exothermic. The equation for entropy includes delta q, or the change in q; this is how q and entropy are related.

A negative q value stands for negative heat. This corresponds to vaporization and melting.

A negative q signifies that heat is being lost/released from the system into the surroundings.

A negative q signifies that the reaction is exothermic and that heat is being released with the reaction.

it means its exothermic and heat is being released from the reaction

It is when energy is released from a system to an environment, meaning the reaction is going to be exothermic. Depending on the problem, it may make you calculate q, and that just means energy is released.

When there is a negative q, heat id negative which means it’s being released.
