Reversible Reactions

Postby Ava Kjos 1D » Tue Feb 12, 2019 3:07 pm

Are reversible reactions always isothermal? Can we assume that delta U = 0 for any reversible or isothermal reaction?

I believe all reversible reactions are isothermal but all isothermal reactions may not be reversible

I think you can make the assumption that isothermal reactions have deltaU = 0. That also means that q = -w

All isothermal reactions have delta U=0 and all constant pressure w=0.

Lyndon in his review session said that in this class, we can pretty much assume that isothermal means reversible.

Will reversible reactions be on the next test?

Not all isothermal reactions are reversible but if a reaction is said to be reversible it is usually isothermal. because there is no temperature change delta U is equal to zero according to the equation U= 3/2nRdeltaT.

Any reversible reaction is isothermal, but never assume that any isothermal reaction is reversible.
