Reducing agent/oxidizing agent

Postby Maayan Epstein 14B » Mon Feb 25, 2019 8:53 pm

When something is a "reducing agent", does this mean it gets oxidized or reduced? Furthermore, does this mean it is the cathode or the anode?

The reducing agent is the substance that undergoes oxidation (losing electrons) and thus corresponds to the anode.

A reducing agent is a substance that is oxidized, which means it loses electrons.

Right, the reducing agent is oxidized because it facilitates and allows for the reduction of the other species. One way to think about it is the oxidation produces the electrons transferred to actually reduce the other species.

The anode is the electrode that electricity flows into. Cathode is the electrode where the electricity flows out of. An anode is positive and a cathode is negative

Just remember that what ever reduces/oxidizes (or is the "reducing/oxidizing" agent) is the one getting oxidized/reduced. Then you can tell if it is the cathode (reduction) or anode (oxidation) half reaction
