Balancing Rules for Redox Reactions
What are some general guidelines or rules to follow when balancing redox reactions?

Make sure the number of atoms and the charges are equal on both sides.

In acidic solutions, add H20 to balance oxygen atoms, and add H+ to balance hydrogen atoms.

Step 1: identify whats being oxidized/reduced
(Oxidation: Loss of e- → reducing agent, Reduction: Gain of e- → oxidizing agent)
Step 2: write the 2 skeletal, unbalanced equations
Step 3: balance all except O and H
Step 4:
Acidic solutions: balance O by using H2O, then H using H+
Basic solutions: balance O using H2O; then H using H2O to the side of each half rxn that needs H and adding OH to the other side
Step 5: add electrons
(Left for reductions, Right for oxidations)
Step 6: multiply to get same e- for both half rxn, add/simplify rxns
