what is the necessity of the salt bridge/what does it do?

As a battery runs its course, electrons travel from the anode to the cathode. The electrodes will quickly stop flowing if they build up too much on one side. The purpose of the salt bridge is to allow anions to diffuse through the salt bridge from the more negative solution to the more positive solution so that the solution stays neutral and a negative charge does not build up. The salt bridge/porous disk just enables ion transfer.

The salt bridge allows for ion transfer between the anode and cathode.

prevents the creation of a charge in either the anode or cathode by allowing ions to travel and keep the solutions neutral

Salt bridges and porous disks both allow for a flow of ions from anode to cathode.
