What is the order of a reaction?

Postby Diviya Khullar 1G » Tue Mar 05, 2019 11:13 pm

Hi,
I am having trouble understanding conceptually what the order of a reaction is. What is the difference between a first and second order reaction?

In a first order reaction, the reaction rate is proportional to the concentration to the first power. In a second order reaction, the reaction rate is proportional to the concentration squared.

in other words:

first order: Rate=k[A]
(rate doubles)
second order: Rate=k[A]^2
(rate quadruples)
