Short hand notation
In the shorthand notation for the redox reactions, the textbook says that the double verticle line represents the salt bridge. What is a salt bridge and what is its importance to a Galvanic cell
Re: Short hand notation
A salt bridge is a tube that is enclosed and allows for transfer of the salt ion from cathode to anode.

Re: Short hand notation
Expanding on the previous comment, a salt bridge, in electrochemistry, is used to connect the oxidation and reduction half-cells of a galvanic cell. It maintains electrical neutrality within the internal circuit, which in turn prevents the call from going into equilibrium.

What does the single line represent then? I thought the single line was the salt bridge?

the single line | represents the interface between phases in contact with each other (including a porous disc/wall)

Re: Short hand notation
The salt bridge connects the 2 half cells and provides a path for migration of cations and anions. Voltaic cells generate electricity and the salt bridge reduces the voltage produced.

the salt bridge is usually shown as a double line when we draw the figures

Re: Short hand notation
The purpose of the salt bridge is to inhibit the reaction from reaching equilibrium too quickly and maintains a neutral charge balance as electrons move from anode to cathode
