What is the best way to remember how to identify which is the oxidizing agent and which is the reducing agent?

Re: oxidizing agent and reducing agent
what is reduced is the oxidizing agent and what is being oxidized in the reducing agent. Its basically flipped

Re: oxidizing agent and reducing agent
The reactant of the reduction half reaction is the oxidizing agent. The reactant of the oxidation half reaction is the reducing agent.

Re: oxidizing agent and reducing agent
The chemical that is reduced takes electrons from the other chemical, which is then oxidized, so is the oxidizing agent. Vice versa for the other chemical.

Re: oxidizing agent and reducing agent
The oxidizing agent is the molecule that has the atom whose oxidation state decreases, due to gaining electrons (reduction). Meanwhile, the reducing agent is the molecule that has the atom whose oxidation state increases, due to the loss of electrons (oxidation).

Re: oxidizing agent and reducing agent
An oxidizing agent oxidizes another atom, meaning that it gains an electron by removing an electron from another atom. A reducing agent reduces another atom, meaning that it loses an electron giving one to another atom. In essence, oxidizing agents are reduced, and reducing agents are oxidized.

Re: oxidizing agent and reducing agent
The compound that is reduced is considered the oxidizing agent. The compound that is oxidized is the reducing agent.

Re: oxidizing agent and reducing agent
The compound that oxidizes (oxidizing agent) is the one that itself gets reduced, and vice versa.

Re: oxidizing agent and reducing agent
Sometimes it seems like in the homework that sometimes both are losing electrons? Which one is the oxidizing agent in that case?
Re: oxidizing agent and reducing agent
The oxidizing agent always oxidizes the other substance and gets reduced.
The reducing agent always reduces the other substance and gets oxidized.
The reducing agent always reduces the other substance and gets oxidized.

Re: oxidizing agent and reducing agent
The oxidizing agent helps a substance get oxidized. It accepts an electron.
The reducing agent helps a substance get reduced. It gives an electron
The reducing agent helps a substance get reduced. It gives an electron

Re: oxidizing agent and reducing agent
The reduced molecule is the oxidizing agent and the oxidized molecule is the reducing agent. They are inversely related.

Re: oxidizing agent and reducing agent
The oxidizing agent is whats being reduced. and the reducing agent is whats being oxidized. You know if its being oxidized if it is becoming more negatively charged, and reduced if it is getting positively charged.

Re: oxidizing agent and reducing agent
If the oxidation number is greater in the product, then it lost electrons (oxidized). If the oxidation number is less, then it gained electrons (reduced).
