catalyst vs intermediate

Postby Ashley McClearnen 1B » Wed Mar 13, 2019 5:11 pm

In catalyses, will the catalyst always be there to begin with and will the intermediate always be formed?

Intermediates are produced and then consumed, so they will be on the products side for one step and then on the reactants side for a second step. Catalysts are present in the beginning of the reaction (on the reactants for the first step) and present in the end of the reaction (on the products for the second step).

Catalysts are there from the beginning, but are never consumed. However, intermediates are formed and consumed within the reaction.

intermediates are produced and then used up in another reaction. a catalyst appears at the beginning and then again at the end. A catalyst can also be a part of the rate law while an intermediate can't.
