### Anode and Cathode

How can you figure out which side of the cell diagram will be the cathode and which will be the anode? Is it only based on the whether the Ecell is negative or positive along, or are there other factors?

The anode is the oxidation and the cathode is the reduction in the reaction.

### Re: Anode and Cathode

If it gets oxidized then it is an anode and if it gets reduced then it is a cathode. I like to think "an ox" and "red cat" when working with half reactions and find it easier to draw my cell diagrams with anode to the left and cathode to the right since it's presented like that in the shorthand notation.

In a cell diagram, the cathode was always on the right side of the double bar divider thing.

I thought if the E knot was negative then the cathode would be on the right?

cathode is always on the right side of ll and anode always on the left side

### Re: Anode and Cathode

Another way to distinguish cathode and anode is to make sure the Ecell comes out to a positive number when you subtract them

Cathode is always on the right side of a cell diagram and anode is always on the left side.

### Re: Anode and Cathode

They will always be

E (Cathode) > E (Anode)
