Combustion Equation

What is the rule for a combustion equation? Do they always produce Carbon Dioxide and Water? I have just never been sure of this. Thank You.

Combustion reactions always have oxygen and a hydrocarbon as reactants and will always produce CO2 and H2O.

Yes, combustion reactions will always yield carbon dioxide and water. If there are other elements involved in the reaction then there will be other products.

Sometimes nitrogen can be an added reactant and product of the equation.

O2 is always going to be added as a reactant in a combustion equation, and the products will include water and carbon dioxide.

generally the equation is CxHyOz + O2= CO2 + H20

Yes CO2 and H20 are always the products and O2 is one of the reactants

The reaction for combustion will be compound + O2 --> CO2 + H2O

Yes, combustion reactions will always produce CO2 and H2O.

They will usually be “--> CO2 + H2O” but in reality it can change or form other compounds.

When would nitrogen be a product from a combustion reaction? Like, in what scenario?

Will this be something that comes up in 14A though? Or should we just assume oxygen and water for now?

Regarding elements other than carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen in combustion, my TA said that if there are questions concerning more complicated combustion reactions, a chemical equation would be given. We are only expected to memorize the "typical" combustion equation for this first test.

The equation should be balanced so that there are the same elements on both side of the equation. If there is nitrogen present in the fuel, it would also be present in one of the products of the combustion equation.

If a problem states it is combustion or that the compound is burned, you must know that the reactants are the compound with O2 and that the products are carbon dioxide and water, because combustion reactions are very common.

Yes in combustion reactions there will always be oxygen and a hydrocarbon as reactants and will always produce CO2 and H2O. Sometimes they can add nitrogen, N, but I believe you would be told to depending on the problem.

Combustion reactions are most of the time with hydrocarbons and according to the definition, hydrocarbons at their basic form do not have oxygen. Therefore, the basic equation of a combustion reaction with hydrocarbons should just be CxHy + O2 → CO2 + H2O.

In a combustion reaction there is always of hydrocarbon molecule and oxygen gas in the reactants. These two reactants combine to form carbon dioxide and water molecules as the products. I heard this is a very important concept to understand, so I'd go over some problems related to it in the homework!

Dr. Lavelle said in class today...if hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen are present in the reactants, it is most likely a combustion reaction!

Yes! Because combustion reactions mean the hydrocarbon (the CH variant reactant) is oxidized (reacts with oxygen) to break down the hydrocarbon and produce carbon dioxide and water.

Another tip for balancing combustion equations would be that if you end up with a 1/2 coefficient, multiply all the coefficients by 2 to get the balanced equation.
