Wave Properties of Electrons- Module Question

Postby somyapanchal1D » Mon Jul 08, 2019 12:33 am

In some experiments electrons display particle-like properties and in other experiments electrons display wave-like properties. True or false?

The answer is True for this question, but I'm not sure why. I thought electrons only display wave-like properties based on the diffraction patterns. Can someone explain why the answer is true and particularly an experiment/case when electrons display particle-like properties.

The electrons have both wave-like and particle-like properties, and the photoelectric effect is a key example showing the particle-like property. The diffraction pattern observed during the experiment we went over in class is evidence that electrons have wave-like properties. As for the particle nature, we can see this in the one-to-one ratio of photons hitting and emitting electrons from a metal surface. If you want to know more experiments about it, you can also search up the cathode ray experiment, where electrons were seen to be streams of particles

I also did not understand why. Thank you for your help.

They experience particle and wave like properties as shown in the slit experiment. If it passes through the slits and hits the detector directly, it is behaving like a particle. However, if it forms a diffraction pattern, it is behaving like a wave - similar to what happens when an incident of light is shown through.
