Electronegativity vs ionization energy

Postby Jasmin Argueta 1K » Thu Dec 06, 2018 11:55 pm

Electronegativity is the affinity for an atom to complete its octet. Whats the difference between this and ionization energy? I know both have the same trend

Electronegativity is the tendency of an atom to gain an electron while its ionization energy its tendency/ energy required to lose its electron

They're both interchangeable. Since ionization energy is the energy needed to remove an electron, that means that an atom with a high ionization energy will also have a high electron affinity since it really wants to keep or get electrons.

Electronegativity is how strongly electrons are attracted to an atom. Ionization energy is the energy required to remove an electron from an atom.

Electronegativity is a measure of how strongly an atom attracts electrons. Ionization energy is a measure of the energy required to lose an electron. It makes sense that they have the same trend because an atom that strongly attracts electrons (high electronegativity) would require more energy to give up an electron (high ionization energy).

Ionization energy is the energy needed to remove an electron. The reason it has the same trend as electronegativity is because as an atom's electrons become more attracted to its nucleus (aka electronegativity increases), the energy needed to remove an electrons would also increase. They both have to do with electrons but ionization energy is as a result of an atom's electronegativity.

The electronegativity is the ability of atoms to attract electrons whereas ionization energy is how well the atom holds valence electrons. The ionization energy is the energy required to remove electrons from a gaseous atoms.
