removing electrons

Hey, I'm confused about which order I remove electrons from each orbital. like do I pull from f before p?

Usually you should pull from the outer to the inner shell, so from p to s to d. It helps if you write out the electron configuration for the neutral atom and then pull or add electrons from there.

For example, Br = [Ar] 3d^10 4s^2 4p^5

Then add or remove electrons:

Br- = [Ar] 3d^10 4s^2 4p^6

Br+ = [Ar] 3d^10 4s^2 4p^4

You would need to pull from the outermost electrons so if you had 4d10 5s2 5p1 you would pull or add from 5p1 first and then if you need to pull more you would move on to 5s2. Pay attention to the numbers out in front of the orbitals and pull from the highest number first.

You always remove electrons from the highest energy orbital As an example, you would remove electrons from 4p before you would pull from 4s.

You'd have to pull the electrons from the highest energy orbital. I think the outermost electrons are easier to remove because the outermost electrons experience less electrostatic attraction.

I believe you are supposed to remove the electron in the highest energy shell, subshell, and orbital first. Additionally, you are supposed to remove electrons that have negative spin first before you remove ones with a positive spin within the orbital (aka you want to pull from a paired electron first in the highest energy subshell first before you pull from parallel electrons).
