Practice Final naming coordinations

Postby Karolina herrera1F » Mon Jul 29, 2019 7:35 pm

On today’s practice final question 8 on the naming I was confused on how to find pt’s oxidation state. I know there is an equation, but for example in part A anime is neutral and cl is a -1x2 -2 and the cl is a -1 charge so then how does that come out to be +4 for pt?

The Roman numeral indicates the oxidation state of the metal, in this case 4. As you can see, it equals out to 0 because the metal is +4, and you have a total of 4 Chlorines of -4, thus resulting in the neutral compound.
