What are polydentate ligands ?

Postby Radha Patel 1A » Sun Jul 28, 2019 11:15 pm

Can someone explain how you can tell if a ligand is a monodentate , bidentate, triedentate ligand etc... ?

Polydentate means that a ligand binds with a metal from multiple places. It "bites" from multiple locations. See below which I copy and pasted from my earlier post on chelating and polydentate.

Structure is very important when it comes to chelating and polydentate material. For example, because of the structure, a bidentate ligand can have 2 interactions per molecule. Look at these two links, both of oxalate with iron, and see how because of the structure of oxalate, it is binding to the iron from two different location. It is "biting" the iron with two different "teeth."

Polydentate ligands can attach to the central metal atom at more than 1 binding site. If it binds at one site/donates 1 e- pair, it's monodentate. 2 sites=bidentate, 3 sites=tridentate, and 4 sites=hexadentate.

Hexadentate is 6 binding sites.

Oops, thanks for pointing out my mistake.
