### homework question M15

When we balance chemical equations how do we know when we are supposed to convert it to grams? If I don't do that what will happen, do you think I would get the question entirely wrong or would I get partial points? thank you very much!!

We balance chemical equations to show the conservation of mass in our reaction. You should only use molar mass to convert to grams if the question requires a second part but you shouldn't be using grams to balance the reaction.

When balancing an equation you are using the stoichiometric coefficients to ensure that the mass on the left (reactants) and the right (products) are equal. Mass doesn't have to be calculated since the mass at the beginning and the end of the reaction should be equal. If you have to convert to grams that would probably a second part to the question where it specifically asks the grams of a certain compound or atom.

When you are balancing an equation you are looking at the number of moles in each molecule and adjusting the coefficient. When you are manipulating chemical equation to find other information such as mass you would convert to grams.

Balancing chemical equations doesn't usually include converting to mass unless there is an additional portion of the question (such as if they are wondering how much of a certain product would be made, given an amount of reactant). While balancing equations is a method of ensuring the conservation of mass, you don't actually deal with mass directly at all!
