Combustion Analysis

Hello! I was wondering if someone could clearly explain combustion analysis to me since I cannot get a clear understanding of it from the textbook. Would someone be able to tell me the significance of it and what I need to know? Thanks

A typical combustion reaction contains O2 and the combusting substance on the reactants side of the equation and CO2 and H2O on the products side. You can then solve this like other molecular/empirical formulas discussed in class.

A combustion analysis allows you to deduce the formula of an organic compound, which is usually CxHy or CxHyOz. It can also be used to determine the percentage purity by mass of a given compound.

If it is a hydrocarbon that is combusting and it combusts completely, then its the hydrocarbon and O2 on the reactant side and CO2 and H2O on the product side.

When combustion occurs, can anything else be a product besides H2O and CO2?

In a combustion reaction the only products are CO2 and H20 when a hydrocarbon is combusted. There are no combustion reactions that do not involve a hydrocarbon and therefore the products will always be CO2 and H20

Most of the time it will be a hydrocarbon reacting with O2 to produce CO2 and H2O. If it is a bigger substance with more atoms then it will usually say, for example, it will also form N2 or NO3 if nitrogen is involved.
