How to write reactions for tests

When writing or balancing equations for tests will we be required to include the state of each element? Ex: solid, liquid, gas, aqueous

The UA at one of the peer discussion sessions said that we most likely will not need to include the states of matter in the balanced equation. However, if all the states of matter for each reactant/product are given (either in an initial unbalanced equation or stated in the wording of the problem), then I think it would be best to include all the states of matter in your final balanced equation.

My TA said we should write them, but I also heard from a UA that we probably won't need to, so maybe write them if you know them just to be safe.

Would the problem be marked as incorrect if we do not include them?

I don't think he ever mentioned knowing the states so I wouldn't be too worried about including them. Obviously if they're given in the unbalanced chemical equation you should keep it in your work, but in general I don't think we are writing our own chemical equations from the names of chemical compounds yet.

You most likely won't but if you know the state it won't hurt you to include it!
