Sig Fig Decimal
If you have adding numbers and get 113.9 and the answer can only have 3 sig figs in it, would the answer be 114 or 114.? Or are they the same thing?
Re: Sig Fig Decimal
They would be the same thing! Only if the number in the ones place was a zero would you need a decimal to include it in your sig figs.
ex.
114 - 3 sig figs
110 - 2 sig figs
110. - 3 sig figs
ex.
114 - 3 sig figs
110 - 2 sig figs
110. - 3 sig figs

Re: Sig Fig Decimal
They both have three sig figs but I think 114 would be the better answer just because the extra decimal after 114 seems unnecessary.

114 and 114. have the same number of sig figs.
114 and 114.0 do not have the same number of sig figs.
114 has 3 significant figures.
114.0 has 4 significant figures.
114 and 114.0 do not have the same number of sig figs.
114 has 3 significant figures.
114.0 has 4 significant figures.

Re: Sig Fig Decimal
As long as you don't add a 0 after . in 114. the answer remains in three significant figures, so either should work!

Re: Sig Fig Decimal
114 and 114. have the same number of sig figs but adding the "." does seem a little redundant so I'd say stick with 114. But 114.0 is not the same as 114 because it has 4 sig figs.

114 and 114. have the same amount of significant figures so you could use either.

Re: Sig Fig Decimal
They are the same thing. But if you add a 0 after ".", then it would be different
Re: Sig Fig Decimal
They are the same amount of sig figs! Since they are the same amount of numbers 114 and 114. they are equal in sig figs.
