Week 2 Homework Problems
For the week 2 homework, should we only be doing the problems from the Quantum World section? I just wanted to make sure before getting started on it.

He didn't specify but that is what we covered in the last 2 lectures so I have been doing problems from the Quantum World homework.
EDIT:
An email was just sent out and it stated:
"Since students want to focus on the high school review topics for test 1 they can hand in homework #2 covering review topics and/or quantum. HW #3 (Week 3) will be only quantum topics."
So this week it's either but next week it is quantum.

I sent email to the class:
"As stated in the Syllabus, students submit homework on recently covered material.
Since students want to focus on the high school review topics for test 1 they can hand in homework #2 covering review topics and/or quantum.
HW #3 (Week 3) will be only quantum topics."

You can do whatever is relevant to the class. Because we have a test on Tuesday over general chem, we can still submit homework in the fundamentals section.

Hey, we are allowed to solve problems for both or just one or the other it all depends on if you feel as though you need more practice with the high school review module for the test next week during the discussion sections.

This isn't a homework problem but under Fundamental E exercises, is the problem, "The approximate population of Earth is 7.0 billion people. How many moles of people inhabit Earth? (b) If all people were pea pickers, how long would it take for the entire population of Earth to pick 1 mol of peas at the rate of one pea per second, working 24 hours per day, 365 days per year?" I was wondering how you solve part b.

I'm doing a mix of fundamental questions and quantum questions. You can decide if you need more practice for the review of fundamentals test or if you are ready to move on to quantum problems!

There was an email sent out that said homework for Week 2 can cover both review topics and the quantum world. I would prefer to focus more on the review topics as there is a test coming up during discussions.

We are allowed to do our homework either on quantum or on the review sections as long as it is five problems total.

Do problems relevant to you at the time. Although we are currently studying quantum, doing problems from the fundamentals unit may help you study for the test. Definitely try and mix it up a bit though.

Microwaves fall between radio waves and infrared, so from lowest to highest energy it would be: microwave, visible light, ultraviolet radiation, x-ray, gamma ray

I think Professor Lavelle mentioned that Quantum Mechanics will be covered in the next couple of weeks. At least I hope so because I've only been working on Fundamentals this week.

Does it matter which subsection the homework problems we are doing are from as long as they are within the quantum mechanics section (like 1A v. 1B v. 1D etc.)?

Doing the fundamentals problems for homework 2 would probably be the best preparation for the test since quantum is not on it.

I think since we are learning about quantum topics for a couple of weeks it should be used for both week 3 and 4.

Week 3 homework is only on Quantum Mechanics; the only reason Prof Lavelle allowed us to use the fundamentals for week 2 homework is because he was giving us the option to gain more practice on fundamentals before the test.

For week 3 we should only be submitting problems from the quantum section. We were allowed to submit fundamentals problems for week 2 because so many students were still preparing for the test, and he didn't want us to have to confuse ourselves with new material before it.

Yes you should be doing the quantum section now. He said you should be doing homework from what was taught in the lectures for that week.

He pretty much said that we were allowed to do both fundamental principles or quantum world problems. Probably fundamentals just because we just had a test and he wanted us to practice and he also wants us to try new set. of problems.

A picometer is 1x10^-12 meters so after you divide the constant (2.998x10^8) by the x-ray's frequency, you divide your answer (which is in meters) by 1x10^-12 to get your answer in picometers.

For Week 2, I did problems on Fundamentals as a practice for Test 1. But for Week 3, we definitely have to do problems from the Quantum World.

Week 2 homework could be quantum and fundamentals solely because we also had Test 1 that week, and Lavelle said doing fundamentals problems for our homework would help us for the test, but because we learned some quantum in class, it was okay to do those problems as well.

Week 2 homework can be on the fundamentals or quantum world since lectures are on QW but the test during W2 is on the fundamentals. The Week 3 homework must be on the QW though.

I believe it varies because I know some TAs that are grading based on solely completion.

i think so, it couldnt hurt to practice since we dont know whhat the exam will be like

The valence electrons are the number of electrons you have.
