### Direct and Indirect relationships

How would we able to identify if two variables have a direct or indirect relationship? I'm very confused on this.

In simple terms, looking at a graph for example, two variables have a DIRECT relationship if as one increases the other also increases, the relationship between two variables is INDIRECT if as one increases the other decreases. A common example in chemistry could be the relationship between wavelength and frequency; as frequency increases wavelength decreases hence they're indirectly related.

A more mathematical way of describing this uses the following equations:
If x*y = k (constant) than x and y are inversely proportional because y=k/x, where if x increases than y decreases.
Conversely, if y/x = k than x and y are directly proportional because y=kx, where if x increases than y increases as well.
