Circular Standing Wave

Postby Reagan Smith 1H » Fri Oct 11, 2019 3:22 pm

Today in the lecture we were told that an electron is described as a circular standing wave around the nucleus. How does this describe why electrons have quantized energy states in atoms? Dr. Lavelle said it was from the line spectra but I do not understand how this is modeled.

These are energy levels at which the electron is stable around the nucleus. In other areas, the electron field would be unstable. These stable levels are represented as n=1, n=2, and on.

If you remember the wave model pictures he showed us where the peaks and troughs overlapped in a circle, the line representing the wave didn’t connect if the energy level wasn’t n=1,2,3,4….etc because it isn’t stable.

During the lecture, he showed us two different pictures of the circular standing wave. One said "allowed energy level" and the other said "not allowed." In the not allowed one, the wave was disconnected at one point and didn't continue around the circle--this is what happens when the energy level is not 1,2,3,4, etc.
