Best Sessions

Postby Joanne Kang 3I » Fri Oct 11, 2019 11:12 am

What are the best sessions to go to for getting extra practice outside of the textbook problems?

If you’re struggling with material, I recommend Step-Up sessions, but if you’re feeling confident in the material and just want extra practice, the Workshop sessions might be better! All of the hours are listed on the class website under the ‘Peer Learning Sessions and Step-Up Programs’ tab. Hope this answered your question!

I recommend doing all the homework problems and attempting to work them out on your own, then visiting a TA's office hours where you can ask specific questions you had on the homework. I think the more specific your questions are, the better off you are to succeed.

I personally find it best to do all the homework exercises because that way you get a taste of everything.

I agree! The assigned homework problems and the post tests posted on Lavelle's website seem to be the best practice for tests in my opinion.

I find it very helpful to go to the step up sessions in Covel! They are really good at working through examples and explaining the topics.

In addition to the sessions in covel, I recommend going over the lecture videos and trying to reexplain the lecture to someone else in your own words

I find the workshops to be most effective, since the UA's make a worksheet relating to the material taught in class which serves as a good test for the material learnt.

If you're an AAP member you can attend peer learning sessions that are weekly that are really helpful. If you don't know if you are eligible or if you are not and still want to apply, Campbell Hall has resources that can help you join the program and gain access to the sessions.

I agree, going to step-up sessions is helpful. As well as TA office hours, AAP Peer learning, or learning from online modules.

Generally in step-up sessions, what's the usual TA to student ratio and about how much time do they spend with each student trying to understand the concepts?

The Step-Up sessions in Covel that I have gone to have had about 15 students and 1 LA leading and going through practice problems. They do a really good job of breaking the questions down so if you're struggling with a topic or just want extra clarification, those would be great resource. However, if you have a good grasp on the concept then these will likely be too slow paced for you.

The step-up sessions help me a lot because they go at a slower pace. In workshops, you're expected to know the material.
