Quantum Levels
Is there a maximum limit to how many principal quantum levels an electron can rise to? Or will they just continue to rise based on increasing amounts of energy?

Re: Quantum Levels
There is not a set maximum limit on the number of quantum levels there can be; it continues to increase with energy.

Re: Quantum Levels
There is no maximum to the number of energy levels. But in the diagram that is drawn in class, the energy levels get closer and closer together.

I'm a bit confused on this too because I would have thought than an atom would lose an electron if it rose too far from the nucleus.

Re: Quantum Levels
I assume their must be a limit since it cannot rise to necessarily any value, and, as the person above me mentioned, at some point the electron would be so far from the nucleus it might fall off; however, Dr. Lavelle never suggested their was a limit, and you shouldn't need to know this for the homework problems :)

Re: Quantum Levels
I think there's a limit to how far an atom can be from the nucleus before it is lost as a "free electron."
I'm honestly not entirely sure though.

Re: Quantum Levels
I'm not 100% sure how many quantum levels there can be, but I believe that there are no maximum number of quantum levels as well.

Re: Quantum Levels
there's really no limit on the levels, but we give electrons quantum levels to serve as a quantifiable measure. additionally, the quantum levels correlate with the type of electromagnetic radiation (visible, ultraviolet) that is present at those energy levels (Lavelle had a slide demonstrating this in the lecture)
Re: Quantum Levels
A limit is not defined but pretty sure in. reality there is one. For the sake of the class I do not think it is something too worry about too much.

Re: Quantum Levels
I remember during the lecture Professor Lavelle did say that the electron could go infinitely away from the nucleus. The energy would, however, be zero. He did say that would be our reference point though. So I'm not exactly sure about a limit.
