What is the difference between constructive and destructive interference?

Constructive interference is when two waves are added together to create a wave that is higher in amplitude.
Destructive interference is when two waves are added together, but then create a wave that in lower in amplitude.
To get constructive interference, the peaks of one wave have to match those of another wave (be right underneath or above), but if you instead have the peaks of a wave match the troughs of the other wave, then you'll get destructive interference.

Constructive interference is when waves are "in phase" (they line up and have the same frequency; the reach their maximum peak at the same time). When constructive interference happens, the maxima of the two waves add together to get a combined amplitude. They are able to "construct" a new amplitude because they line up/are in phase.
Destructive interference is when waves are "out of phase" (they are opposing; not reaching maximum peak at same time). This means that the waves cancel each other out, resulting in a lower amplitude.

In constructive interference the crests or troughs of the waves interfere with the other meaning that their amplitudes are added to get the total amplitude of the wave, however in destructive interference the crests or troughs of the waves interfere with each other meaning that the amplitudes are subtracted from each other.

In constructive interference, the amplitude of the resulting wave is equal to the sum of the maxima of the two individual waves. In destructive interference, the two waves "cancel each other out" so resulting wave has an amplitude equal to the difference between the individual waves.
