When to apply Sig Figs

Postby Hawa Kamara 1F » Sun Oct 13, 2019 2:58 pm

Is it alright to apply sig figs at the last calculation or should I start from the very beginning?

i like to apply the sig figs AT THE VERY END of my calculation. i write all the decimals points given to me by my calculator at each step of the problem or question. This ensures that I get the most accurate answer i possibly can.

Sig figs should be applied to the final answer because rounding during your calculations could affect your results.

I don't apply sig figs in between steps or calculations just to avoid error that could come from rounding prematurely.

You should apply sig figs at the end of the calculation so that you do not get a rounding error for your final answer. It will be more accurate if you wait until the end.

during your calculations, do not round to sig figs until the final answer. I think when you are doing a problem you can write the number as 3.456.. to show you have the rest of the number saved in you calculator and are going from that

Sig figs should only be taken into consideration when you have calculated the final answer. In the steps leading up to the final answer, use the entirety of the values to get an accurate answer. As mentioned, applying the rules of sig figs in between calculations can lead to extremely rounded final answers, resulting in incorrect answers.
