Hi, I am slightly confused about the example that Dr. Lavelle showed in class today: "For H-atom the electron is confined to its nuclear diameter, 1.7x10^-15m." He stated that this number would be the electron's uncertainty in position (delta x) in the Heisenberg and I am just slightly confused as to why that is the uncertainty. Thank you!
This would be the uncertainty, because at any given time, the position of the electron can be anywhere to what it is "confined" to. For example, similarly, if we imagine the uncertainty of a ball bouncing around the box, the only positions that the ball could have would all have to be within the box. If this box had was 2 feet long than on the x positional coordinate, the only place it could be would be within two. Therefore this would be its uncertainty. I hope this helps!
