### 1D-15

Can somebody explain how you find angular momentum quantum numbers like in this question?

What are the principal and orbital angular momentum quantum numbers for each of the following orbitals: (a) 6p; (b) 3d; (c) 2p; (d) 5f?

Principal numbers are your n values while the angular values are your l values. For example for 6p, n = 6 and l = 1.

Additionally, principal quantum number (n) specifies the size and energy level the electron is in, while angular momentum quantum level specifies the shape of the orbital.

To find the principal quantum number, just look at the number before the letter. To determine the angular momentum quantum number, use the following idea:
1. s = 0
2. p = 1
3. d = 2
4. f = 3

Thus, let's apply this idea to the problem:
(a) n = 6; l = 1
(b) n = 3; l = 2
(c) n = 2; l = 1
(d) n = 5; l = 3
