in lecture, lavelle really only said we needed to be familiar with s, p, and d blocks when writing electron configurations .
but in homework problem 1D.21 part C, the answer was in terms of the f orbital.
do we still only need to know the s, p, and d blocks, or should i familiarize myself with "f" too when writing electron configurations?

I think what he meant was that s,p, and d orbitals are mainly used in life science and the f orbital is for the unnatural elements. I think we may still have to write electron configurations based on f, so familiarize yourself with it.

I believe Dr. Lavelle said we will only need to be familiar with s,p,d blocks for quizzes and exams however, I am sure there will be a few homework questions that involve the material so it might be helpful to know how F fills.

I also feel that on the midterm or final we would only be tested on s, p, and d orbitals since those are mainly what he covered in class.

Except the homework problems, we won't be really tested on the f orbital on our midterms and finals. It comes up as the textbook has problems for all the orbitals but we just give more attention to s, p, and d orbitals.

Remember that since l=n-1, that since the 4g is on the 4th energy level then l could only go up to l=3, which would correspond to the f subshell, not l=4, the g subshell
