Valence Shell Electron Configuration

Could anyone explain how to find valence shell electron configurations? More specifically how do you know what portion of the full configuration is included in the valence shell electron configuration? Thank you!

When writing out the electron configurations for atoms or ions, it is convention to be able to abbreviate the formula to the last noble gas before the element whose configuration is to be found. For example, for Mg it would be Ne and for Ti it would be Ar. From the atomic number of the noble gas you know how many electrons have already been accounted for, and can write out the rest of the electron configuration from there. Hope this helps!

How I like to remember it is of you make it across a period, right to left, then it is not in the valance electron. These electrons would be considered core eelcteons and anything after that is the valence. This rule does not apply for nobel gases. With nobel gases the out sheel is filled so the valence shell contains the e- in that energy level (n=?)

Valence electrons are always in the largest energy level. When writing out the configuration just look for all the e- that are in the largest energy level.
