Oribital Notation

Postby JohnWalkiewicz2J » Wed Oct 23, 2019 3:20 pm

When writing electron configurations for atoms in orbital notation, is there a particular way we should write it? I mean, should we write it having shells increase from top-bottom? or from bottom-top? or perhaps linearly? Thanks in advance!

You should write it from lowest to highest energy.

My TA told us that we should just be writing it all in one line...so 1s with the orbital notation above it, 2s with the orbital notation above it and so on.

Sometimes its difficult to know what order to write the orbitals. The best one to remember which orbitals have higher or lower energy is with this chart. Follow the arrows from bottom to top and when your done return to the bottom of the next arrow.
