Does the Octet Rule apply to Boron?
Does the Octet Rule apply to Boron (B), or is Boron a special exception that only needs 6 valence electrons?

Re: Does the Octet Rule apply to Boron?
The octet rule does not apply for boron, as it would be more stable with 6 valence electrons, when bonded to other atoms.

No, the Octet rule does not apply to Boron bc it is more stable with 6 e-.

Re: Does the Octet Rule apply to Boron?
Unlike the other elements, boron is not one of the elements subject to the octet rule as it is more stable when it has 6 electrons rather than eight.

Other elements not subject to the octet rule are Hydrogen, Helium, Lithium, and Beryllium.

Sulfur is capable of forming 6 bonds as seen in SF6 but I'm not sure if we need to know that particular exception.

H, He, Li, and Be all do not apply to the octet rule. Boron also does not apply because it acts as a more stable atom with 6 electrons rather than 8.

Re: Does the Octet Rule apply to Boron?
Other elements can also exceed the octet rule by being satisfied with more than 8 electrons such as the elements in the third row or higher

Re: Does the Octet Rule apply to Boron?
Boron is more stable with 6 electrons and does not follow the octet rule.

Al can also violate the octet rule by having only 6 electrons.

Re: Does the Octet Rule apply to Boron?
Both Boron and Aluminum are both satisfied with six valence electrons instead of 8 as implied by the octet rule.

Re: Does the Octet Rule apply to Boron?
The octet rule does not apply to boron because it only has 6 electrons. It also does not apply strictly when elements are in the third period or higher. This is because of the presence of d-orbital electrons allowing for exceptions when chemically bonded.

Re: Does the Octet Rule apply to Boron?
a little off topic but C, N, O, F are strict followers of the octet rule!
