Octet exception examples
What are the octet exception examples that we usually need to know on tests?

Re: Octet exception examples
The lecture slides listed H, He, Li, and Be as exceptions to the octet rule. However, I think that Dr. Lavelle said that we'd discuss more exceptions in the next lecture.

Boron also is an exception at times and there are some elements in the periodic table that can hold more than 8 electrons, but I think we'll talk about these in class at some point.

Re: Octet exception examples
During Wednesday's lecture, he mentioned H, He, Li, and Be as being exceptions to the octet rule because it was very unlikely that they would gain the electrons needed to complete an octet.

Boron typically has 6 valence electrons, forming 3 covalent bonds. Right?

Yeah, Dr. Lavelle said these elements can exceed the octet rule because they have empty d orbital electrons

In addition to the octet examples that others mentioned (H, He, Li, Be, and occasionally B), elements after phosphorus can have an expanded octet due to the additional d shell orbitals in n=3 and after.

Re: Octet exception examples
Why are H, He, Li, and Be able to exceed the normal level of valence electron bonds?
