Anion

How would I represent an anion in a lewis structure?

Re: Anion

For an anion, you would add the negative charge to the number of electrons in order to figure out the total number of electrons to draw in the Lewis structure. Moreover, you can then draw brackets around the whole Lewis structure and write the negative charge outside the top right corner of the brackets.

Re: Anion

Similarly with cations, take the charge into account when counting the number of valence electrons, and then put brackets around the structure with the charge written on the outside.

Re: Anion

An anion is indicated in a Lewis structure by drawing brackets around the molecule with the overall charge written out next to it. When determining how to draw this Lewis structure, you sum the valence electrons of all atoms in the molecule. Then, you add the number of electrons indicated by the charge of the anion to the previous sum.

Re: Anion

Typically you would represent that it's an anion by adding a negative sign in the top right hand corner after the brackets.

Re: Anion

First, add the negative charge to the total number of electrons in order to know how many electrons to represent in the Lewis structure. Second, you can draw brackets around the Lewis structure and write the negative charge besides the top right corner.

Re: Anion

The Lewis structure of anion must have one less electron than it would usually have, in addition to the brackets around the overall compound.

Re: Anion

You calculate the number of electrons (plus/subtract positive/negative charge) and then draw the lewis structure. You also put brackets around the entire model and indicate the charge on the top right outside the brackets.
