why is it that P, S and Cl can accommodate more than 8 valence e-? He explained it but his I'm still pretty confused why

They have a d orbital that can accommodate more electrons for bonding as opposed to period 1 or 2 elements that are limited to s and p orbitals

They can accommodate more than 8 valence e- because they can utilize their d orbitals for bonding.

Atoms in period 3 (or higher) have d-orbitals in their valence shells that can accommodate additional electrons after the typical limit of 8 valence e- is achieved.

The d orbitals can accommodate the extra valence electrons
