Bond Length

Why double and triple bonds have shorter bond lengths than single bonds?? Also is it possible for an element to form a quadruple bond???

I am not 100% sure but i thought that the triple and double bonds are shorter in theory but when they were actually tested they were the same as the single bonds.

triple bonds are shorter in length than double, and double than single. This is because these types of bonds are stronger and therefore draw the elements closer. And yes, quadruple bonds exist but they are most stable among transition metals.

To add on, double bonds involve more electrons so the attraction forces are stronger, which causes double bonds to be shorter.

Single bonds are longer than both triple bonds and double bonds. While double bonds are longer than triple bonds. The stronger the bond the shorter the bonds are, drawing elements closer to each other in the process. Double bonds are stronger than single bonds and triple bonds are stronger than both double and single bonds.
