p-orbitals

Postby 205389184 » Sun Oct 27, 2019 6:05 pm

Would we have to write out all the p-orbital values or can we keep it simplified? Example: N: 1s^2 2s^2 2px^1 2py^1 2pz^1, or can we just write it as 1s^2 2s^2 2p^3?

My TA said you don't have to write out the px, py, or pz so I think you can just combine them and write 1s^2 2s^2 2p^3

In general, I believe you can use the simplified form without being so specific, unless Dr. Lavelle specifies otherwise.

You don't need to write Px, Py, or Pz.

The Px, Py, Pz should only be used when showing if the orbitals are full.

Unless otherwise specified by the question, you can just write 1s^2 2s^2 2p^3.

You should use the simplified form unless specified otherwise (i.e. if the question wants to know which orbitals are occupied).

I believe that you can leave it as the more simplified version. If you look in the periodic table in the textbook, they list electron configurations for various elements and all of them are left in the simplified form (not displaying the x,y,z)

If we're writing a larger p-orbital values, can we use a noble gas to substitute? Ex. [Ne]3s^1

I have never been told to write out px, py, or pz.I don't think we'll be required to.

You don't have to to use x,y,z.

I don't think it is a requirement to use x, y, z. You should only have to write it as whatever quantum number it is and then "p".
